Patchwork A Story of 'The Plain People" by Anna Balmer MyersI purchased this book at Amazon quite a while ago. I say "purchased", how ever it was free and is still free yet today.
I was surprised when I read about the author who wrote this book in the 1920's. It is a sweet, wholesome story of Phoebe, a plain person, who finds that she wants to not be so plain. When a schoolteacher appears in her town from Philadelphia, she sees a more modern, "fancier" woman that she wants to model her life after.
Her childhood friends, David and Phares are both interested in her as more than just a "friend". Yet as she grows up she wants to stretch her wings a bit and take singing lessons in Philadelphia.
Having been raised by her father and her father's sister as a plain person, they would be much happier to have her stay on the farm and live out her days in the manner of the Plain People. Yet she finds a way to make her dream come true. She leaves behind her friends and family to seek out a new way.
As times change in the world and war breaks out, she finds that caring about others is a very important part of her life. She finds the true meaning of where and how her life should be lived.
This is a very sweet and descriptive book on the Plain People, in this case, of the Brethren Church. It was an enjoyable read and because the author lived in the time period of the book, probably quite accurate as to the circumstances. This is a very nice historical fiction, and for free, how could you go wrong?

I found the book interesting, but not a true "Amish" book. To those familiar with Amish traditions and rules, you would pick up on that right away. But, it was a good read about life in that era, during WWI and the controversy within the church. Life lessons were obviously the best part and I found the basis of home of church uplifting. Not really a cliff hanger type of book, more an easy read.
Excellent story set in the late 1800's thru to the 1st world War. Very believable and well written. The tone and feel of the "plain" people is very real. It's not truly about Amish, but more about the Pennsylvania Dutch who may have spun off the Amish sect. The story centers around a young girl and her growing up years. I highly recommend this to any and all.
I gave this book about the "Plain People" 5 stars,because it is a precious story of love, heroic military servitude, Phoebe's learning the importance of simple life vs. a famed life of singing and so much more! It is a story that shows true love in many shapes and forms and the reality that quality time, lifelong friendships and constant showing of love is most important to those we hold dear to our hearts.
I enjoy reading about the plain people. This book also showed the other side when Phoebe went away to study music and lived a more modern lifestyle and the consequences caused by some of her choices. It make me think about how a simple choice can lead to sin or to get into a situation that is wrong. I so want a more simple, peaceful lifestyle and books like this make it even more so.
I enjoyed this book very much . It is good to realize the Amish people don't always feel completely content living their humble, hard lives. The young girl was brave to follow her hearts desire and move to be part of the sinful world. Her self examination and appreciation of what her family had lived before her and instilled in her brought her real longings and deep faith alive again. Her decision to seek after the life that had been hers all her life brought her happiness, the love of a good husband and her own self respect . This story is an easy read and grabs your interests from the first page. I recommend this book if you enjoy reading about the Amish life style. The Amish people are to be respected and admired for standing up for their life style .
I didn't like this book at all. The title made me think this book was about the Amish and when I searched for books on the Amish, this book came up. But, when I started to read it, I noticed that the descriptions of how the characters dressed is nothing like any of the Amish I've ever come in contact with. The way the characters spoke was odd to me and hard to follow. There were a lot of words that I couldn't get a definition on (When I hard pressed on them through the kindle). The grammar was weird too.
Phoebe's mother died when she was an infant so she is reared by her father and a strict aunt in a Pennsylvania farming community. She makes friends with two young boys, David and Phares, and in this age of innocence, wanders the rolling hills together. She finds a mother's love from her friend David's mother. As the years flow by she develops into a beautiful young lady with a talent for singing. She goes to Philadelphia to train her voice where she is lured by high society and the night life but trouble causes her return home. David's mother losing her sight and David returning from the war changes the direction her life was taking. A sweet, story that could be considered a classic of a simpler time.
